Contribution to Standards
For the MediaMap partners, the policy of founding the efforts on standards has been adopted, in particular the OAIS (ISO 14 721) reference model with RDF, OWL, METS, MXF, AAF, DCMI, IFLA, SMIL as main construction bricks for wrapping the exchange packages. There is no real contribution to a new standard, but there is a real progress expected from an Open Semantic Bus enriched with the semantic metadata container (the USE) and semantic search engine! The integration of all those standards will really open the way to new models of production in the Content Industry.
One of the issues of the MediaMap project will be to demonstrate to the ISO that the main sources of updates, which provide Descriptive Information for the AIPs, are Community of users and not mainly an Administration as it is actually described in the Model:
“The Receive Database Updates function adds, modifies or deletes information in the Data Management persistent storage. The main sources of updates are Ingest, which provides Descriptive Information for the new AIPs, and Administration, which provides system updates and review updates. Ingest transactions consist of Descriptive Information which identifies new AIPs stored in the archive. System updates include all system-related information (operational statistics, Consumer information, and request status). Review updates are generated by periodic reviewing and updating of information values (e.g., contact names, and addresses). The Receive Database Updates function provides regular reports to Administration summarizing the status of updates to the database, and also sends a database update response to Ingest.” (CCSDS 650.0-B-1 Page 4-9 January 2002)
The dynamics of AXIS (based on standards, mainly the OAIS, the DCMI and the RDF) covers the architecture of indexing the chain of acquisition and the specifications of import/export open in a universe. For AXIS, the control of the wrapping of information must be organized according to the three modes of OAIS (SIP, AIP and DIP) and cover the acquisition of originals. To reach a viability of long-term accessibility, architectures SIP, AIP, DIP can be organized like autonomous entities [“Autonomous Assets Entities” (AAE)]. The AXIS Architecture comprises the essential theoretical bases: metadata, configuration, indexing, ontological and semantic, controls, synchronizations, support physical/given, proxies,… The management engineering of the contents of media according to architecture SIP - AIP - DIP and of the profiles (base of the creation of these autonomous entities (AAE) offers a great flexibility in the means of distribution and brings sustainability to the files.
The USE will inherit from already interoperable standards, and it will be proposed with the Unique Semantic Bus as a new standard in the UPnP and DNLA commission.
Some partners of the project are already involved in standardization bodies. Contact will be made as appropriate with those bodies (the RTBF has the intention to propose the results to the EBU P/MAG metadata group the concept of USE and OSB), international organisations (UNESCO is involved in the project MEMORIES and has the intention to promote the AXIS concept worldwide), organisations and other research projects involved in semantic resource discovery and identification. UTC will also propose the use to the W3C either for a standard or an incubation workgroup. The whole MediaMap project will also be recorded to the Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. Some members are also working with the Titan association who coordinate several activities, projects, technology-watch around the subject of the ‘open exchange’ of media contents with their associated metadata and controls (European Media Wrapper Round Table).
